The Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU), a national trade union based in Kampala, Uganda
whose focus is labour and worker rights issues, is seeking to recruit a Project Coordinator (PC). With funding from
USAID, ATGWU collaborates with the Solidarity Center (SC) and Family Health International (FHI) to implement
ROADS project, a regional HIV/AIDS Program targeting the mobile groups and communities along the northern
transport corridor. ATGWU interventions include setting up and running resource centres at strategic SafeTStops a long
the corridor in Uganda for the long distance truck drivers and affiliated communities they interact with.
This position is based at the Union Headquarters but will involve regular travel to different parts of the country and
limited travel within the Great Lakes Region on supervisory visits to the resource centres and meetings with other
ROADS II project partners.The Project Coordinator reports to the ATGWU General Secretary, based at the Union
Headquarters in Kampala.
Major Program Responsibilities of the Project Coordinator
- Develops and supervises activity/work plans for the project including the resource centres.
- Trains, mentors and supervises resource centre coordinators, their assistants and peer educators to ensure their workmeets ROADS objectives, while adhering to USAID guidelines and the country’s policies.
- Provides technical, programmatic support and guidance to the Union, resource centre staff
- Compiles and submits monthly narrative and financial reports
- Undertakes regular monitoring visits to all the sites to evaluate program performance and suggest ways to improveproject implementation.
- Works in close collaboration with other ROADS project cluster groups to ensure effective sharing of information and facilities at the resource centres.
Basic Qualifications and Experience
The Project Coordinator should posses a minimum qualification of a diploma in social work, education and/or
community health. Five (5) years experience in HIV/AIDS, health and related community development programming is
required. Previous work with an NGO, especially a trade union, is desirable. S/he must possess very good interpersonal
skills, including supervisory, leadership and team building skills and be able to manage multiple tasks within a limited
time frame. The applicant must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Ability to
communicate fluently in Swahili and Luganda is a definite advantage. Computer literacy in Word processing and Excel
spread sheet are a must.
